The Management of the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) has appealed to the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to reconnect electricity supply to the hospital following the death of some patients in critical care after an abrupt disconnection.
The hospital said the action by the distribution company had put the lives of patients on life support machines at grave risk.
“The Management of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) appeals to Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) to reconnect the hospital to electricity supply in order to avert further loss of lives of patients on critical life support equipment,” the hospital stated.
In a statement signed by the hospital’s Head of Information Unit, Mrs Hauwa Inuwa Dutse, AKTH expressed sadness over the development.
“The Management is saddened by the death of some patients in critical care after KEDCO abruptly disconnected the entire hospital from electricity supply over pending electricity bills which the hospital is earnestly working to pay,” Dutse said.
According to her, the hospital regularly settles its electricity bills from Internally Generated Revenue and also procures diesel to power its on-site generators.
She added that the hospital was not indifferent to its financial obligations and called on KEDCO to show understanding.
“The Management of AKTH appeals to KEDCO to support its healthcare delivery services to patients by restoring electricity to the hospital as it takes steps to defray outstanding bills,” the statement added.
