A coalition of civil society organizations (CSOs) in Kano State has raised serious concerns over what it described as a growing pattern of intimidation, harassment, and suppression of dissenting voices, warning that such actions threaten the state’s democratic governance.
The groups, speaking in solidarity with Amnesty International Nigeria, condemned alleged violations of citizens’ rights to freedom of expression and called on the Kano State Government to respect constitutional guarantees.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, endorsed by over twenty civil society leaders—including Comrade Bala Abdullahi Gaduwama of Wuro Development Concerns, Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo of the Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement, Mohammed Bello of the African Centre for Innovative Research and Development, and Abdullahi Y. Sule of Youth and Environmental Development Association—the coalition cautioned against the misuse of security operatives to stifle peaceful criticism.
“The use of security agencies to silence dissent undermines democratic governance and erodes public trust in state institutions,” the statement read. “Democracy thrives on open dialogue, constructive criticism, and active civic participation. Silencing dissent not only violates constitutional rights but also weakens accountability and transparency in governance.”
The coalition reminded the government that freedom of expression is guaranteed under Section 39 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and reinforced by Nigeria’s commitments under regional and international human rights instruments, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
It further urged Kano State authorities to immediately halt the intimidation of critics and ensure that security agencies operate strictly within the law while respecting human rights. The groups also called for an environment where citizens can freely express opinions without fear of reprisal.
“Criticism of government policies is not a crime but a vital component of democratic engagement. A government that listens to its people is stronger, more accountable, and more transparent,” the coalition added.
The CSOs concluded by reaffirming their commitment to defending human rights, promoting democratic values, and supporting lawful efforts to ensure justice and accountability in Kano State and across Nigeria.
