The Bauchi State Police Command on Thursday said it had deployed massive security personnel and enhanced weaponry to troubled communities in Alkaleri Local Government Area to curb banditry and forestall a breakdown of law and order.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Nafiu Habib, disclosed this during a press briefing in Bauchi, following what he described as a resurgence of security concerns in Gwana, Digare and Kafin Duguri communities of Alkaleri LGA.
Habib said the operation was being carried out through joint efforts involving the police, the military, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and other security agencies.
“In recent days, there has been a resurgence of security concerns in Gwana, Digare and Kafin Duguri. Following a thorough security assessment, the Command, in collaboration with sister security agencies, has initiated a massive deployment of joint security personnel to the affected communities with a view to suppressing the activities of these criminal elements,” he said.
He noted that the affected border communities had for years faced security challenges due to the infiltration of criminal elements from neighbouring states.
The police spokesman, however, reassured residents of Mansur town, who reportedly fled their homes over fears of attacks, that the situation was under control.
“Despite recent incidents in neighbouring Gwana District, Mansur town remains unaffected, and there is no cause for alarm,” Habib stated.
“I confirm to you that massive deployments of security personnel and enhanced weaponry have been put in place to prevent any breakdown of law and order. Operatives are working tirelessly to ensure peace and stability in the affected areas,” he added.
Habib further assured residents of Alkaleri LGA that there would be no safe haven for bandits, stressing that security operations would be sustained to rid the area of criminal elements.
He said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Sani Omolori Aliyu, underscored the need for community cooperation in tackling insecurity.
According to him, the CP urged residents to promptly provide credible intelligence to security agencies and report suspicious movements, strange faces or objects within their communities.
Habib added that the police boss assured residents that all information provided would be treated with strict confidentiality and encouraged citizens to go about their lawful activities without fear.
