Katsina State Police Command has confirmed that four people died in a stampede during the distribution of Ramadan alms by a philanthropist.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, said in a statement on Sunday that several others were injured in the incident.
He said, “On 26 February 2026, at about 9 pm, a distress call was received at the Central Police Station, Katsina, about a large crowd gathered at the residence of Alhaji Dahiru Usman Sarki, a philanthropist, situated at Kofar Guga Quarters, Katsina, resulting in a stampede.”
DSP Aliyu added, “Upon receipt of the report, a team of policemen responded to the scene. The victims were rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention. Unfortunately, four of the injured later succumbed to their injuries.”
The Commissioner of Police, Katsina State, CP Bello Shehu, extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He also directed an investigation into the incident.
CP Shehu urged individuals planning to distribute alms to inform the police in advance to ensure adequate security, maintain order, and safeguard lives.
