The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced an investigation into a suspected fake lawyer, John Anoruo, over the alleged possession of a forged Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) seal.
The anti-graft agency disclosed this in a statement posted on its official social media handles on Tuesday, noting that Anoruo was arrested by operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2, Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday, April 20, 2026.
According to the EFCC, the suspect, who operates a legal and educational consultancy in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, came under investigation after he submitted a petition on behalf of his clients.
The statement read in part: “Operatives of the Lagos Zonal Directorate 2 of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ikoyi, Lagos, have commenced an investigation of a suspected fake lawyer, John Anoruo, for possession of a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).”
The EFCC further explained that the matter began after Anoruo filed a petition dated September 22, 2025, against the management of a company, Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited.
However, the commission said investigations uncovered irregularities in the documents submitted by the suspect.
“His case began after he submitted a petition dated September 22, 2025, to the EFCC on behalf of his clients against the management of a company, Global West Vessel Specialist Nigeria Limited,” the statement added.
The EFCC noted that both the petition and a subsequent Letter of Withdrawal dated March 5, 2026, carried a forged NBA seal.
It added that Anoruo allegedly admitted to obtaining the seal from an undisclosed business centre in Lagos.
During interrogation, the 55-year-old suspect reportedly claimed that he obtained a law degree in 2018 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Enugu State, through evening classes but did not attend the Nigerian Law School.
The EFCC stated that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
