The Federal Government has approved an increase in peculiar allowances and other welfare benefits for civil servants in the country.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this at a press briefing on Friday in Abuja.
Walson-Jack said the move was aimed at improving the take-home pay of civil servants and boosting the morale of the government workforce.
She explained that the increment would affect workers under the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS).
According to her, the adjustment is designed to ensure a broad-based impact across all cadres of the civil service.
“The allowances have been structured to reflect across all grade levels, leading to better earnings for both senior and junior officers,” she said.
The head of service also announced a review of key allowances, including duty tour allowance (DTA), estacode and book allowance.
She noted that almost all allowances captured in the Public Service Rules had been revised.
“One key reform is the approval of 100 per cent DTA for civil servants attending approved training programmes, irrespective of whether travel is involved or not.
“Even if you are based in Abuja and attend training within Abuja, you are entitled to full DTA,” she said.
Walson-Jack further disclosed that the Federal Government had introduced an exit benefit scheme for retiring civil servants under the Contributory Pension Scheme.
She said the scheme, which provides 100 per cent of a retiree’s full emoluments as an exit package in addition to their pension, would take effect from Jan. 1, 2026.
According to her, the initiative is part of efforts to enhance dignity in retirement.
“No public servant should leave service without adequate financial support,” she said.
The head of service added that the government had also operationalised the Employee Compensation Scheme to provide financial protection for workers who suffer job-related injuries or death.
She said the reforms followed growing calls by labour unions for improved welfare for civil servants amid rising cost of living.
It would be recalled that the Federal Government had, about two years ago, approved a salary increase of between 25 per cent and 35 per cent for civil servants on the remaining consolidated salary structures.
These include the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Paramilitary Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and the Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
