Libya, who sit at the bottom of Group D, defeated Rwanda 1-0 in Kigali, securing Nigeria’s spot in the tournament’s finals.
The result leaves Rwanda five points behind the Super Eagles with only one match remaining, meaning they cannot surpass Nigeria’s point tally, even if they defeat the Super Eagles in their upcoming match in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, on Monday.
In their most recent match against Benin Republic, the Super Eagles played to a 1-1 draw, ensuring they finish top of the group. With one round of matches remaining, Nigeria leads the group with 11 points from five matches, followed by Benin Republic with seven points and Rwanda with five.
Libya remains at the bottom of the standings with four points.
Benin Republic must win their final match against Libya or hope for a Super Eagles victory over Rwanda on Tuesday, while also avoiding a loss themselves.
The Super Eagles were runners-up in the last AFCON edition, where they lost to host nation Côte d’Ivoire in the final.
Thursday’s strike brings Victor Osimhen’s tally to 23 goals for the Super Eagles, moving him into a joint-second position on Nigeria’s all-time top scorers list, level with the legendary Segun Odegbami.
