A day after the Jigawa State Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal Sankara, was cleared of adultery charges by an Upper Shariah Court in Kano, the police arrested Nasir Buba, the estranged husband of the commissioner’s alleged lover, Tasleem Baba-Nabegu, according to Daily Nigerian.
Mr. Buba was apprehended outside his lawyer’s office on Tuesday, accused of cyberstalking his wife.
The case initially attracted attention when Kano State Hisbah operatives arrested Mr. Sankara following Mr. Buba’s complaint that the commissioner was involved in an extramarital affair with his wife.
Mr. Buba subsequently filed a case at the Upper Shariah Court.
On Monday, the presiding judge, Ibrahim Sarki-Yola, dismissed the case, citing findings from an investigation conducted by the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Zone 1, Kano.
The police report stated that no evidence was found to substantiate the allegations of adultery against Mr. Sankara.
Mr. Buba’s arrest, however, sparked controversy.
Sources close to the case claimed that Mr. Buba had presented evidence, including videos, chats, and voice recordings, suggesting a sexual relationship between his wife and the commissioner.
“It’s obvious the police are biased in this case. Nasir has tendered incriminating evidence, but they chose to clear the commissioner and arrest the complainant instead,” a source familiar with the matter alleged.
When contacted, Abdullahi Kiyawa, the spokesperson for the Kano State police command, said he had not been briefed about Mr. Buba’s arrest but promised to investigate.
“The arrest has not been brought to my attention. And remember, even the previous incident was handled at the AIG office, Zone 1. But I will investigate to confirm if the arrest was made or not,” Mr. Kiyawa stated.
