In an effort to mitigate social vices within society, the Kano State Government has announced its intention to revise the Kano State Censorship Board Law. The aim is to oversee and regulate the activities of social media accounts operating within the state.
This announcement was made by Barrister Haruna Isa Dederi, the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, during his meeting with the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Censorship Board on Friday in his office.
The details of this development are outlined in an official statement signed and issued by Musbahu Aminu Yakasai, Information Officer at the Kano State Ministry for Justice, on Saturday.
Expressing concern, the Attorney General emphasized the erosion of societal norms and values through certain films and social media platforms. “These influences have contributed to a decline in behavioral standards and a weakening of our cherished cultural heritage, as highlighted by Haruna Isa Dederi”.
He further underscored that the Kano State Censorship Board bears the primary responsibility of ensuring that films and literary creations align with our religious beliefs, cultural practices, and established legal framework.
In support of this effort, Haruna Isa Dederi pledged the full backing and cooperation of the ministry for the forthcoming review and amendment of the Kano State Censorship Board Law 2019 amendment.
During an earlier discussion, Abba Almustapha, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Censorship Board, explained that the purpose of his visit was to garner the Attorney General’s support and collaboration in reevaluating the board’s 2019 amendment to the law.
Given the widespread misuse of social media platforms, Alhaji Abba Almustapha highlighted the urgent need to incorporate platforms such as WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok, as well as Islamic musicians, into the legal framework. This inclusion would facilitate the regulation of provocative content in songs and other literary works.
Moreover, Abba Almustapha advocated for the expansion of the law’s scope to encompass printers, TV game centers, and photo laboratories. He emphasized the importance of soliciting the Attorney General’s support in these endeavors to effectively steer the proposed law amendment in the desired direction.
