The Supreme Court has scheduled Friday, January 12, 2024 to deliver a final judgement on the lingering Kano governorship election dispute between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and Nasiru Gawuna.
This was contained in a notice issued by the apex court to all the parties in the suit on Wednesday.
In late December last year, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court led by Justice John Inyang Okoro had listened to arguments by the parties concerned and reserved judgement on the case.
Recall that the INEC had declared Mr Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship polls in the state after polling 1,019,602 votes against his opponent Mr Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who trailed with 890,705 votes.
However Mr Gawuna’s party the APC challenged the results in the election tribunal which sacked Mr Yusuf by deducting 165,616 votes from his tally and declared Mr Gawuna winner of the polls.
Dissatisfied with the ruling, Governor Yusuf appeal the case at the Court of Appeal, which also sacked him, this time relying on the claim that he was not a registered member of his party the NNPP, at the time of the election.
Again, not satisfied, the governor filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, which is due to settle the case on Friday.
