In a welcome initiative for students fasting during Ramadan, the Kano State government has partnered with the Bayero University Kano (BUK) New Campus Committee to provide daily meals to over 800 students.
The program stemmed from a needs assessment that identified students struggling to afford meals while staying on campus throughout the holy month. Initially aiming to feed 200 students daily, the overwhelming response prompted an expansion to reach 1,000 students.
“We are grateful for the positive contributions,” said Dr. Nura Ibrahim, the Committee Coordinator, acknowledging the collaboration from individuals, private organizations, and the government.
The Annur Possibility Center has also joined the effort, providing financial support to ensure the program continues. Their aim, according to Ustaz Ismail Okon Odun, is to offer meals to anyone in need, regardless of background.
Student reactions to the program have been mixed. Abdulwahid Abdulsalam, a law student, called it “a great privilege” for less fortunate students. However, some students have raised concerns about long wait times to receive meals.
Maryam Abdulfatai, an information and media studies student, noted that while food distribution follows government guidelines, obtaining meal tickets can be lengthy.
“The major challenge is the long queues,” said Rukayya Muhammad Bala, a political science student. She added that students can wait at the mosque or return to their hostels while they wait for meals to be ready.
