The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has come out strongly against the recent hike in electricity tariffs announced by the federal government.
The NEF expressed deep concern and disappointment over the decision, which they say will have a significant negative impact on everyday Nigerians.
Under the new plan, daily electricity costs could reach a staggering N5,400, translating to a monthly bill of N162,000 and a yearly expense of N1,971,000.
“The idea of implementing these hikes without considering the impact on the average citizen is not only insensitive but also short-sighted,” said NEF spokesperson Abdul-Azeez Suleiman.
The NEF fears the increase will widen the gap between the rich and the poor, potentially leading to internal security threats due to rising frustrations.
The Forum also criticized the lack of empathy shown by the government towards its citizens.
“We believe this decision was made without carefully considering the economic realities faced by most Nigerians,” said Professor Ango Abdullahi, a former vice chancellor and NEF member.
Abdullahi further called for a return to a parliamentary system of government, which he believes would serve the people better than the current presidential system.
The NEF’s statement comes amidst growing public anger over the electricity tariff hike. Many Nigerians are struggling financially, and this increase is seen as an unnecessary burden.
