President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated former military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (retd.), on his 85th birthday, describing him as an elder statesman who has impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has.
Tinubu, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described Babangida as an outstanding leader whose military career culminated in his emergence as Head of State following the 1985 coup.
The President acknowledged Babangida’s eight-year rule, saying it left enduring marks on Nigeria’s political, economic and geographical landscape.
“Like him or not, former President Babangida impacted Nigeria in ways no other leader has. His eight-year reign left enduring marks on our political, economic, and geographic landscape,” Tinubu said.
According to him, Babangida expanded the nation’s economy, established infrastructure and created agencies and institutions that continue to serve the national interest.
He also credited the former military leader’s foresight, wisdom and sense of fairness with helping to shape the creation and survival of several states in the country.
“But for his foresight, wisdom, and sense of equity and fairness, many states in the federation might not exist today,” the President said.
Tinubu said Babangida’s name and legacy would remain indelible in Nigeria’s history because of his contributions to national development.
He added that despite his retirement from public life, Babangida continued to contribute to national discourse through his counsel and guidance.
“Even in retirement, living a quiet life at his Minna Hilltop residence in Niger State, General Babangida continues to offer valuable counsel and guidance to the nation. His advice and wise counsel remain an inspiration to younger generations,” he said.
The President wished the former military ruler continued good health and strength, praying for many more years for the elder statesman.
“I wish you continued grace, good health, and renewed strength. May Almighty Allah keep you with us for many more years to come,” Tinubu added.
