Zainab Nasir Ahmad, a passionate humanitarian and activist from Kano State, has become a shining example of resilience in Northern Nigeria. Born and raised in a region where traditional norms often silence discussions on women’s issues, Zainab has defied these boundaries, emerging as a powerful advocate for change.
Her activism began with a bold campaign in 2018 to address the taboo topic of menstrual hygiene. What began as a local initiative quickly grew into a regional movement, challenging deeply entrenched cultural taboos and raising awareness about the needs of girls and women across the North.
Through her strategic use of social media, Zainab expanded her reach, educating her followers and amplifying her message. Her online platform allowed her to challenge stereotypes and advocate for women’s rights, solidifying her role as a trailblazer not only in Kano but across Nigeria. Her efforts have been met with both support and resistance, as she continues to confront societal stigmas and work toward the empowerment of the girl child.
Zainab’s early life in Kano was marked by a curiosity and resilience that set her apart. From a young age, she was aware of the challenges women and girls faced, which inspired her to pursue a career in activism. Encouraged by her parents, she excelled academically, studying Sociology and later Community Development at Bayero University Kano. Her education laid the foundation for her future work, equipping her with the tools to address the social issues affecting her community.
Her activism has not been without its challenges. In her pursuit of social justice, Zainab faced backlash and personal attacks, particularly during her campaign for menstrual hygiene. In a society where discussions about menstruation were often considered forbidden, Zainab’s efforts were met with fierce opposition, including online harassment and threats. Despite these challenges, she remained steadfast, drawing strength from her belief in the importance of her work.
Zainab’s activism also brought her into conflict with conservative elements of her community, especially when she spoke out on issues such as marriage and gender equality. Her views were often misinterpreted, leading to public condemnation. Despite this, she continued to advocate for change, driven by a desire to challenge societal norms and create a better future for women and girls.6One of the most significant moments in Zainab’s journey came in December 2021, when she led a peaceful protest against the widespread violence and insecurity in Nigeria. Although she was interrogated by the Department of State Security (DSS) and pressured to withdraw, Zainab’s determination only grew stronger. Her experiences, though difficult, have only reinforced her resolve to continue fighting for justice and social change.
Zainab’s achievements include her groundbreaking campaign on menstrual hygiene, which has inspired similar initiatives across Northern Nigeria. As Executive Director of YOSPIS (Youth Society for the Prevention of Infectious Diseases and Social Vices), she revitalized the organization, expanding its programs and initiatives. She also spearheaded a successful project to rehabilitate over 600 repentant thugs in Kano, fostering peace and reducing violence in the community. Additionally, her innovative use of sports to promote peace during the 2023 Kano State gubernatorial elections demonstrated her creative approach to activism.
Zainab’s leadership has inspired a new generation of activists, particularly young women, to take up leadership roles in their communities. Her success as a female leader in a male-dominated sphere has challenged traditional norms and shown that women are capable of leading transformative change.
