The Nigerian Women for Agricultural Progressive and Development Initiative (NWAPDI) has urged immediate action to strengthen laws and allocate resources to combat gender-based violence affecting women and youth in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.
During a one-day “train the trainer” seminar in Abuja, held as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, NWAPDI National Coordinator Omolara Svensson highlighted the far-reaching impact of such violence. She stated that gender-based violence is not just a women’s issue but one that affects society as a whole.
Svensson revealed that NWAPDI is conducting nationwide training sessions during the activism period to bring together farmers, community leaders, and advocates in amplifying the voices of women in agriculture.
“No woman should have to choose between ensuring her family’s survival and protecting herself from harm,” Svensson emphasized. “To our leaders in government, agricultural organisations, and civil society, you have the power to enact real change. Strengthen laws, allocate resources, and lead by example. When women are silenced, our agricultural communities lose their voices, innovations, and potential. This undermines productivity, food security, and rural development.”
She further remarked, “A woman who feels safe and supported can plant and grow. But a woman living in fear cannot thrive, and when she suffers, we all suffer.”
Hariratu Yakubu, NWAPDI North Central Zonal Coordinator, underscored the critical role of women and youth in Nigeria’s agricultural sector while highlighting the challenges they face, including violence, harassment, and exploitation.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our economy, providing livelihoods for millions of Nigerians,” Yakubu said. “This is why we urgently call for resources, support, and preventive actions to address gender-based violence in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.”
