The Association of Kano Online Journalists (ASKOJ), in collaboration with the Human Rights Journalists Network Nigeria, Advocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France), and E-RIGHT, will hold a webinar on data protection, privacy, and digital journalism.
The event is scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2025, and is open to journalists, editors, media students, digital rights advocates, legal professionals, and civil society actors in Nigeria and beyond.
In a pre-event interview, Comrade Salisu Yakubu, Chairman of ASKOJ, said the training addresses growing challenges facing journalists in the digital age.
“This training is meant to equip journalists and other relevant stakeholders with the necessary capacity to understand the dilemmas of digital journalism, data protection laws, and newsroom responsibilities,” he stated.
He added that journalists must be more conscious of the ethical and legal consequences of their work.
“It is essential for journalists to be aware of best practices for consent, transparency, and privacy in the digital space,” Yakubu added.
The ASKOJ chairman also expressed concern over press freedom and digital surveillance in the country.
“Real-world surveillance and digital repression in Nigeria have become rife. It is critical that journalists are equipped with the capacity to navigate and challenge these threats effectively,” he said.
He urged stakeholders, especially in the media and human rights sectors, to attend the session.
