Badegi FM Shutdown: Only NBC Can Suspend Broadcast Stations – FG

The Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation has weighed in on the suspension of Badegi FM, a Minna-based radio station, by the Niger State Government, reminding stakeholders that only the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has the legal authority to suspend broadcast licenses.

In a statement signed by Rabiu Ibrahim, Special Assistant (Media) to the Minister, the Ministry addressed public criticism and media concerns following the shutdown.

The order to suspend Badegi FM was reportedly issued by Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago during an expanded APC caucus meeting in Minna on August 1.

The Minister of Information was also present at the meeting. Governor Bago is said to have accused the station of “unethical broadcasting and incitement against the government.”

Responding, the Ministry stated, “The suspension of broadcasting licenses falls within the purview of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), as stipulated by law.”

The Ministry noted that the Niger State Government has taken the matter to the NBC.

“In light of this, the Ministry welcomes the decision of the Niger State Government to formally report the perceived ‘unethical behavior’ of Badegi FM to the NBC for resolution.”

It added that the NBC should be allowed to handle the issue.

“The Minister appeals to all parties to remain calm, assuring that the NBC has the necessary mechanisms to resolve the issue in a fair and impartial manner.”
