The National President of the Niger Delta Youth Council (NDYC), Bene Mamamu, has called on the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and other security agencies to intervene in what he described as “brewing unrest” between the Itsekiri and Ijaw communities in Warri, Delta State.
In a statement issued in Warri on Wednesday, Mamamu said tension was rising in the area following allegations that Itsekiri youths were behind the vandalisation and removal of banners mounted to celebrate the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ogbe-Ijoh monarch, HRM Couple Mackson Oromoni, Monbene III.
The banners, displayed in different parts of the metropolis, were meant to mark the decade-long reign of the monarch, who is regarded as a promoter of peace and development in the kingdom.
Mamamu described the removal of the banners as “a blatant disrespect to the traditional institution and a provocation that could lead to unrest.”
“This is not just an attack on the banners; it is an attack on our culture, our heritage, and our identity as a people. We will not stand by and allow such acts to go unchallenged,” he said.
The youth leader warned against any further move capable of provoking the Ijaws, saying, “The attempt to truncate the 10th coronation anniversary of HRM Couple Mackson Oromoni, Monbene III, will be resisted and met with commensurate action.”
Mamamu urged security agencies to take immediate steps to prevent violence, stressing that the alleged act “could be interpreted as a declaration of war against the Ogbe-Ijoh people.”
“This is a critical moment for peace and unity in the Niger Delta. We urge all parties involved to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue rather than resorting to violence. The youth of the Niger Delta are tired of conflicts. We want development, peace, and a future where our voices are heard,” he added.
