Fighters from the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed a Nigerian military convoy in Borno State on Friday night, killing several soldiers and abducting a serving general, HumAngle reported.
The kidnapped officer, described as a brigade commander, was reportedly leading the troops at the time of the attack. If confirmed, this would mark the first recorded instance of an extremist group in Nigeria capturing a serving general directly from the frontline, HumAngle said.
While insurgents have previously killed high-ranking military officers, abductions of such senior officials remain rare. Members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) were also among those killed in the ambush.
The Nigerian Army has yet to release an official statement on the incident. Lieutenant Colonel Onyechi Anele, the army’s spokesperson, did not respond to requests for comment, and casualty figures have not been independently verified.
