The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has recognized a volunteer staff member for returning more than 20 million naira ($26,000) accidentally left in a commercial tricycle by a co-passenger.
Mr. Nura Abdullahi was commended on Friday by the NSCDC Zone 12 Commander, Assistant Commandant General Amos Abiodun-Taiwo, who described the act as “a rare display of honesty, integrity and professionalism.”
Abdullahi discovered the money after a passenger, Alhaji Mustafa from Katsina State, inadvertently left a bag behind. Using the last dialled number on the passenger’s phone, which he had borrowed moments earlier, Abdullahi contacted Mustafa and returned the cash.
“It is very rare in our days to find someone who would return such a huge amount of money, especially under the current economic hardship,” Abiodun-Taiwo said. “Nura is not even a regular staff; he is a volunteer and could not boast of 20,000 naira in his account. Yet, he chose honesty.”
Following verification of the incident, the Commandant-General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, directed that Abdullahi be publicly recognized as an example of integrity within the corps.
Abiodun-Taiwo urged the public to emulate Abdullahi’s moral values, saying integrity remains invaluable despite economic challenges. He also confirmed that Abdullahi would be “handsomely rewarded” for his exemplary conduct.
