Violent protests broke out in Gwarzo Local Government Area on Sunday as angry youths allegedly set part of a government building on fire over worsening insecurity in the area.
Kano Times gathered that the unrest followed repeated attacks by suspected bandits, leaving many residents living in fear and uncertainty.
Eyewitnesses said the protest began peacefully, with hundreds of youths marching through major streets, chanting slogans and demanding urgent government intervention to address the growing security situation.
However, the demonstration reportedly turned violent when the protesters moved to the Local Government Secretariat, where some youths allegedly forced their way into sections of the premises.
Parts of the building were subsequently set ablaze, sending thick smoke into the air and causing panic among residents and passers-by, many of whom fled to safety.
A resident, who spoke to Kano Times, said frustration among community members had intensified in recent weeks due to persistent attacks and what many described as an inadequate security response.
“People are tired of sleeping in fear. The attacks have become too frequent, and there is no strong response. That is why the youths reacted this way,” the resident said.
Another resident appealed for calm, warning that the destruction of public property would not resolve the insecurity challenge confronting the area.
“We understand the frustration, but violence will not solve the problem. What we need is dialogue and urgent security action,” he added.
Security operatives were later deployed across the area to restore normalcy and prevent further escalation, while authorities reportedly commenced efforts to investigate the incident.
As of the time of filing this report, the Kano State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the development.
