The Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN) has called for the immediate and unconditional release of activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, describing his continued detention as an attack on fundamental human rights and democratic freedoms.
In a statement issued on Monday by its Executive Director, Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, Esq., the organisation condemned Sowore’s remand following proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
CEFSAN said the continued detention and prosecution of the activist reflected a disturbing pattern of intimidation, harassment, and judicial persecution of individuals who speak out against injustice and demand accountability from public authorities.
“The detention of Omoyele Sowore is an unjustifiable restriction of his fundamental human rights and a direct attack on the principles of freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and civic participation,” the statement said.
The group urged Nigerian authorities to release Sowore unconditionally and end what it described as the harassment and persecution of human rights defenders, journalists, activists, and other citizens exercising their constitutional rights.
According to CEFSAN, the prosecution of Sowore is part of a broader trend of shrinking civic space in Nigeria, where dissenting voices are increasingly subjected to arrest, legal intimidation, and institutional abuse.
The organisation further called on relevant authorities, national institutions, and the international human rights community to defend human rights and oppose attempts to silence legitimate calls for justice, transparency, and good governance.
