The Labour Party (LP) has unveiled Hajja Bintu Konto, a public health expert and humanitarian, as the running mate to its 2027 presidential candidate, Dr Chibuzo Okereke.
The party said the nomination followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and reflected its commitment to presenting Nigerians with a ticket built on competence, integrity, inclusiveness and proven capacity for public service.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Barrister Ken Asogwa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja.
Asogwa described Konto as a seasoned public health expert, humanitarian and development practitioner with more than three decades of experience in healthcare delivery, community development and humanitarian intervention.
He said that during her career with Catholic Relief Services, Konto served in several strategic leadership positions, including Community and Government Liaison Programme Officer, where she coordinated engagements with governments, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and local communities.
According to him, she also coordinated humanitarian response and community mobilisation programmes across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, improving the lives of thousands of vulnerable Nigerians, including internally displaced persons.
The spokesman said Konto is a trained nurse, midwife, health educator and public health specialist with a Master’s degree in Public Health, adding that she also served as a lecturer in Community Health.
He added that she currently serves as a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria and National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN).
Asogwa said Konto’s experience in governance, humanitarian coordination, women’s empowerment, community mobilisation and public policy implementation, as well as her proficiency in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, would strengthen the party’s vision for national development.
“The nomination of Hajja Bintu Konto further underscores the Labour Party’s enduring commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and the promotion of competent leadership drawn from every part of our country,” he said.
He added that Konto and Okereke represented “a new generation of purposeful, people-centred leadership committed to restoring hope, strengthening national institutions, reviving the economy, improving security and delivering responsible governance.”
The party called on Nigerians to support its presidential ticket in the 2027 general election.
