The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Katsina has granted bail to security analyst and public affairs commentator, Dr. Bashir Kurfi, after he was arraigned over alleged defamation.
Kurfi was granted bail following his appearance before the court, where he was charged with offences bordering on defamation.
Speaking with journalists after Monday’s proceedings, counsel to the defendant, Barrister A.D. Umar, described the court session as smooth and fair.
“We had a smooth court session and, in fact, everything went well. The court has done what is right by granting him bail, considering the nature of the allegations against him,” Umar said.
He added that both the defence and prosecution were satisfied with the outcome of the proceedings.
“We are all satisfied. Not only him, even the prosecution is satisfied,” he stated.
Umar explained that the court granted Kurfi bail on the condition that he provides two reliable sureties who must be residents of Katsina and show evidence of ownership of landed property.
He said each surety would enter into a N500,000 bail bond in the event that the defendant fails to appear before the court, adding that the defence team had committed to ensuring Kurfi attends all court sessions.
“The defence has undertaken to make sure he appears in court until the conclusion of the case,” he added.
The court adjourned the matter until August 13, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
Kurfi was arraigned last week following his arrest by the police over allegations of defamation and related offences. He has denied the allegations.
