The National Population Commission (NPC) has commenced the full digital registration of births and deaths across the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State.
The commission said the exercise is being carried out under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system through its VitalReg platform.
The NPC Federal Commissioner representing Ebonyi State, Jeremiah Nwankwegu, disclosed this during a press briefing in Abakaliki, the state capital.
Nwankwegu said the initiative, which officially commenced on July 1, 2026, was aimed at ensuring the accurate and timely documentation of births and deaths in the state.
He said reliable civil registration was essential for generating vital statistics needed for public policy formulation, equitable resource allocation and national development planning.
“This is part of our collective effort to strengthen civil registration, enhance the generation of vital statistics, and ensure that every birth and death occurring in Ebonyi State is captured through a modern, digitally enabled system,” he said.
The commissioner also announced that records relating to change of name through Deed Poll would now be integrated directly into the NPC’s main portal and social registry.
He said applicants would be required to submit a valid affidavit, newspaper publication and a certified Deed Poll executed by a legal practitioner.
Meanwhile, the commission has commenced activities to mark the 2026 World Population Day in Ebonyi State.
The theme of this year’s celebration is: “Realising the hopes and aspirations of young people, today and for the future.”
Nwankwegu said the theme highlights the need for public policies and strategic investments to address the realities and aspirations of young people.
He said the future of a nation was determined not only by the size of its population but also by the opportunities available to its citizens.
The NPC commissioner commended the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and other development partners for their support towards advancing the state’s population and development agenda.
He also called for the speedy completion of the ongoing revision of the National Youth Policy, which is currently undergoing final stakeholder review.
