Five people have died while 10 others were rescued after two separate building collapses in Kumbotso and Fagge Local Government Areas of Kano State.
The incidents occurred on Saturday at Gaida in Kumbotso and Kurna in Fagge, with the Kano State Fire Service receiving distress calls at 2:34 p.m. and 2:40 p.m., respectively.
The Fire Service Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.
According to him, the first incident occurred at Gaida, near Salbas Filling Station, where a building under construction collapsed on six workers.
He said two workers, Muhammad Hassan, 17, and Khalid Abubakar, 19, were rescued alive, while four others were rescued unconscious but later died.
The deceased were identified as Sunusi Surajo, 18; Bashir Ibrahim, 20; Ibrahim Ibrahim, 25; and Abubakar, 30.
The second incident occurred at Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya School in Kurna, where a building collapsed on nine students.
“Firefighters from the Kurna Fire Station rescued eight of the nine students affected by the collapse,” the statement said.
It added that the ninth victim, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was rescued unconscious but later confirmed dead.
The Fire Service said the causes of the two collapses were under investigation.
The agency urged building owners, contractors and construction workers to comply with approved building standards, especially during the rainy season.
“We urge members of the public to take building safety seriously and ensure that appropriate standards are followed to prevent avoidable loss of lives,” it said.
