Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has opened up about how he defied parental consent to marry his first wife, Hajia Titi Atiku Abubakar, more than 50 years ago, describing her as a true blessing to his life and their family.
Atiku made the revelation during the 75th birthday celebration of Hajia Titi in Abuja on Saturday. The event was attended by close friends, family members, and political associates.
In a heartfelt message shared on his Facebook page, the former vice president praised his wife’s patience and unwavering support over the decades.
“On the occasion of my beloved wife Titi’s 75th birthday, I am proud to say I couldn’t have married a better woman. We got married in the most daring way—without our families’ consent and with only two friends present,” Atiku recalled.
“Today, more than 50 years later, Titi has proven to be a blessing beyond measure. I thank her for her patience, especially with my shortcomings. I don’t even remember how we started calling each other ‘Mummy’ and ‘Daddy,’ but I’m grateful for the journey,” he added.
Atiku urged other couples to embrace patience in their relationships, saying, “Patience is a virtue you’ll never regret. I encourage spouses to be patient with one another.”
Hajia Titi, born Titilayo Albert, hails from a Christian Yoruba family in Ilesa, Osun State. She was raised in Lagos, where she attended Lafiaji Primary School, then went on to St. Mary’s, Iwo, for her secondary education, completing it in 1969.
She married Atiku in 1971, when he was a young customs officer, and later studied at Kaduna Polytechnic where she also lectured. Hajia Titi speaks English, Yoruba, and Hausa fluently. She converted from Christianity to Islam after her marriage.
