The Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Waheed Ayilara, has passed away following a prostate cancer surgery at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
According to reports from The Nation Newspaper, Ayilara died on Thursday morning, as confirmed by a family member.
“We are very sad to inform you that our friend, brother, and family, the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State, Waheed Ayilara, is dead,” the family source stated.
A senior police officer in Akwa Ibom State also verified the news of Ayilara’s death.
As of now, the Nigeria Police Force has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
Ayilara, who previously served as the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, succeeded AIG Idowu Owohunwa in his current role.
He was assigned to lead the Akwa Ibom State Command by Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in February 2024.
