In a landmark move, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has issued a service-wide circular mandating all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to comply with the National Accessibility Regulations.
This directive, announced by the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), represents a significant advancement in ensuring equal access for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
The circular requires all MDAs to implement necessary measures to enhance accessibility, facilitating barrier-free access to public services, facilities, and opportunities for persons with disabilities.
This initiative highlights the Federal Government’s dedication to promoting the rights and welfare of disabled individuals.
In conjunction with this mandate, the NCPWD, in collaboration with Qualitative magazine and supported by the Leprosy Mission Nigeria, has launched the sign language version of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act 2018.
This initiative aims to make the act more accessible to the Deaf community, empowering them to understand and assert their rights. Previously, an audio version of the act was made available for the visually impaired.
The NCPWD urges all MDAs to fully adhere to the SGF’s directive and work collaboratively to create an inclusive environment for persons with disabilities. Compliance with this directive is crucial in dismantling accessibility barriers and fostering a society where everyone can thrive, regardless of their abilities.
Furthermore, the NCPWD calls on all stakeholders, including development partners and advocacy groups, to continue supporting these initiatives to ensure widespread awareness and implementation.
