Tension gripped Rimin Kebe quarters in the Nasarawa local government area of Kano on Monday evening when the body of an unidentified woman was discovered hanging at the residence of Malam Abdullahi Isah, also known as Malam Auduwa, during Sallah celebrations.

The woman had reportedly visited Malam Auduwa seeking spiritual help.

According to SolaceBase, Malam Auduwa, who inherited his role from his late father, an Islamic scholar, provided her with water imbued with supplications. However, the woman returned later and was subsequently found hanging in his toilet.

A chair believed to have been used in the hanging was discovered at the scene. She had tied a thick rope to the roof, leaving her body dangling.

Malam Auduwa’s brother, Rabi’u Isah, claimed that the woman never met his brother. He stated, “A man using the toilet found the corpse while Malam Auduwa was away.”

Neighbor Jibril Isah Zango confirmed that someone in the house reported the incident, adding that Malam Auduwa and his students were absent at the time, having gone to inform the police.

Zango noted, “The woman arrived alone with her two children, instructing them to leave and return later. By the time they returned, she had already hanged herself.”

Eyewitness Umar Ibrahim Umar described the incident as unusual for the Hausa community.

He was informed of the hanging while waiting for a friend after the Maghrib prayer, observed around some minutes to seven in the evening.

Umar noted, “There were conflicting reports about Malam Auduwa’s awareness of the woman’s presence, but the police were notified and took the body to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) for further investigation.”

Malam Ilyasu Adamu, the Ward Head of Rimin Kebe Gabas, remarked that this was the first recorded suicide in the community, and police investigations are ongoing.

Police Officer Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa told reporters that the police had not yet been informed about the incident but assured that an investigation would be conducted.

He stated, “We are yet to be informed about the incident. But we will surely investigate and find out what is going on.”

The community remains on edge as the investigation continues, seeking answers to the tragic event that marred the Sallah festivities.
