Kano-based journalist Salim Ibrahim, who works with Media Trust, publishers of Daily Trust Newspapers, shared his experience after a thief broke into his home and stole food.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 7th, in Kano State, leaving Ibrahim and his family in disbelief.
On his verified Facebook page, Ibrahim described how the thief took a 25kg bag of rice, spaghetti, macaroni, seasoning, and vegetable oil.
The thief even consumed leftovers from his son’s meal the night before.
“Today, I woke up to a stealing activity, all the food stuff in my house was taken away. From the 25kg bag of rice which not even a quarter was used to spaghetti, macaroni, seasoning, and vegetable oil was emptied,” Ibrahim wrote.
He noted that only food and some metal objects like worn-out brake pads and discs were stolen, likely to be sold for scrap.
Ibrahim expressed relief that his brother’s wedding boxes filled with textiles and a refilled gas cylinder were left untouched.
“Alhamdulillah, I felt at ease when one of my brother’s wedding boxes (brand new), more than half of the textile materials bought to fill the boxes were spared… Also, my cooking gas cylinder, which was beside the vegetable oil he emptied, was spared because I believe it was too heavy for him to move easily as it was refilled just yesterday,” he added.
Ibrahim reflected on the situation, pointing to the issue of poverty and hunger in society. “This is a reflection of what the society has found itself in. Everybody is hungry!” he concluded.
