A member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Ilyasu Musa Kwankwaso, has called on northern politicians to support President Bola Tinubu’s bid for reelection in the 2027 presidential election, arguing that it would set up a path for power to return to the North by 2031.
Speaking in Kano on Sunday, Kwankwaso highlighted the need for northern unity in achieving this goal.
“We in the North must team up to ensure that Tinubu and Shettima are reelected in the 2027 general election,” Kwankwaso stated, urging northerners to remain steadfast despite opposition to the president. “Supporting President Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election will help secure our path to power in 2031,” he added.
Kwankwaso also warned against listening to northern politicians who advocate for an alternative candidate from the South, saying this could delay the North’s chance at the presidency.
“If another candidate wins in 2027, the North will have to wait another eight years for power to return to our region,” he remarked.
Addressing arguments around security concerns affecting President Tinubu’s reelection, Kwankwaso defended the administration’s actions, noting progress made in addressing armed banditry in the North.
“Those opposing on the basis of security concerns are being unfair. President Tinubu has taken steps to address this issue,” he asserted.
He also rejected suggestions to pair former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso with a southern presidential candidate, stating that this would not benefit the North.
Kwankwaso recognized Defense Minister Bello Matawalle’s efforts in addressing insecurity in the North, particularly in the Northwest.
“The best support we, people from the North, can give to President Tinubu is to rally around him, focusing on peace in the country,” he concluded.
