Sheikh Lawan Triumph’s Preachings Under Watch – Kano Police Appeal for Calm

The Kano State Police Command says it is closely monitoring the public debate surrounding recent sermons delivered by Islamic preacher Sheikh Abubakar Lawan Triumph, which have triggered strong reactions among certain groups in the state.

In a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the Command acknowledged the tension generated by the cleric’s remarks, adding that while the constitution guarantees freedom of expression and worship, these rights must be exercised within the bounds of law and order.

“The Kano State Police Command is aware of the recent controversy surrounding the preachings by Sheikh Abubakar Lawan Triumph, which has generated heated discussions and concerns among certain groups,” Kiyawa said. “While acknowledging the rights to freedom of expression and worship, we are also mindful of the need to maintain public peace and order.”

According to the police, the Commissioner of Police invited the Sheikh on July 10, 2025, and initiated dialogue with stakeholders including government officials, religious leaders, and community representatives to de-escalate the situation.

“The CP has begun discussions with relevant stakeholders to address the concerns and ensure that necessary measures are in place to prevent any potential escalation,” the statement noted.

The Command appealed to residents to remain calm, urging restraint and civility in both online and offline engagements. It also advised against inflammatory rhetoric, particularly on social media platforms.

“We encourage anyone with legitimate concerns or complaints to channel them to the appropriate authorities rather than resorting to acts that could lead to infractions or inflammatory rhetoric on social media,” Kiyawa stated.

The police further reiterated their commitment to safeguarding the rights of all residents while promoting peace and mutual respect across communities.

“The Kano State Police Command is committed to maintaining peace and order in the state while upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and respect for all citizens, regardless of their background or affiliation,” the statement added.
