The Convener of World Hausa Day, Abdulbaqi Jari, has called for the adoption of Hausa as a unifying language across West African countries under the Economic Community of West African States.
Jari made the appeal on Monday at a press briefing in Katsina ahead of the 2025 World Hausa Day celebration slated for August 26 in Daura, Katsina State.
He urged the Federal Government to recognise Hausa as Nigeria’s national language, describing it as one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages in Africa with the capacity to foster unity and integration.
“This is a matter of linguistic and cultural independence for African people,” he said.
According to him, many African countries had already recognised and promoted their local languages to boost national identity and pride, adding that Hausa naturally fits into such a role because of its dominance across Nigeria and most ECOWAS states.
He maintained that adopting Hausa would improve communication, trade, commerce, and social cohesion across the sub-region.
Jari also encouraged Nigerians and other Africans to visit Daura during the celebrations to experience authentic Hausa heritage and traditions.
On preparations for the event, he disclosed that venue arrangements, security logistics, and government backing had been secured in collaboration with the Daura Emirate Council.
He, however, advised participants to prioritise safety.
“We remind participants, especially travellers, to be security conscious, journey during daytime, and familiarise themselves with the environment before arrival,” he added.
The convener commended the Katsina State Government and the Daura Emirate Council for their support, while also lauding the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creativity, Hajiya Hannatu Musawa, for her commitment to cultural promotion.
