Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, on Wednesday accused foreign lobbyists of fuelling the narrative of a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria.
Idris, who spoke at a press conference in Abuja, said government investigations indicated that a network of external actors, particularly in the United States, were deliberately promoting divisive and misleading portrayals of Nigeria’s internal security challenges.
He said, “The Nigerian government has been able to see a correlation between some of the lobbyists operating especially in the US and the activities here (in Nigeria).”
The minister noted that while insecurity has affected many communities across the country, there is no evidence to support claims of systematic targeting of any religious group.
Idris urged stakeholders to verify information before making claims that could exacerbate tensions in the country.
