The Kano State Fire Service says no fewer than 120 persons lost their lives in fire outbreaks, road accidents and water-related incidents across the state in 2025.
The Service disclosed this in an end-of-year statement issued by its Public Relations Officer (PRO), ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, on Wednesday in Kano.
Abdullahi said the Service responded to a total of 838 distress calls recorded between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2025.
“Out of the total calls received, fire outbreaks accounted for 665 cases, rescue operations recorded 130 incidents, while 43 calls turned out to be false alarms,” he said.
He added that despite the scale and frequency of the emergencies, personnel of the Service were able to save 91 lives through prompt and effective response.
According to him, the incidents also had serious economic implications, with properties worth about N6.47 billion destroyed during the year.
“However, due to timely intervention by our firefighters and rescue teams, properties valued at approximately N15.32 billion were successfully salvaged,” Abdullahi said.
The PRO explained that the operations covered all the 44 local government areas of the state and were carried out through the Service’s 30 fire stations under the leadership of the Director, Alhaji Sani Anas.
He expressed concern over the rise in residential fire incidents, noting that 376 cases were recorded in 2025.
“Many of these residential fire outbreaks are preventable and are often caused by unsafe practices in homes,” he said.
Abdullahi urged residents to take fire safety seriously by adopting basic preventive measures and exercising caution in the use of electrical appliances and handling of flammable materials.
He stressed that increased public awareness and cooperation were essential to reducing avoidable disasters and safeguarding lives and property across Kano State.
