The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria Peoples Party has accused the state government of acting undemocratically and targeting its members.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Engr. Ibrahim Karaye, on Saturday, the NNPP alleged that the government had embarked on what it described as a political witch-hunt against its members.
Karaye claimed that the state government, which he said was formed on the NNPP platform before leaving the party, had begun withdrawing Hajj seats earlier allocated to some members of the party, including former commissioners, advisers and party leaders.
He said the affected individuals, as indigenes of Kano State, were entitled to the allocations.
“The actions taken against our members are undemocratic and unwarranted. The affected persons are citizens of Kano State and are entitled to such privileges,” the statement read.
The party also alleged that former political office holders were being harassed and intimidated to return official vehicles allocated to them during their tenure.
Karaye described the vehicles as part of the consolidated benefits attached to the offices while the officials were in service.
The NNPP urged the state government to desist from actions it said could undermine democratic principles, adding that politics should be conducted with decorum and mutual respect.
It further called on the authorities to respect the constitutional right to freedom of association, warning that political offices are not permanent.
