No fewer than four persons have been confirmed dead after a Golf Wagon vehicle plunged into Tomas Dam in Danbatta Local Government Area of Kano State on Tuesday evening.
The Kano State Fire Service disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Abdullahi.
Abdullahi said the incident occurred at about 7:10 p.m. when the Danbatta Fire Service Division received a distress call from a resident identified as Suleman.
According to him, the vehicle, with an unknown registration number, was travelling from Kano to Roni in Jigawa State when it veered off the road and plunged into the dam.
He explained that 10 persons were involved in the accident, adding that firefighters promptly responded to the emergency and evacuated all the victims from the water.
“Four victims were rescued unconscious but were later confirmed dead,” the statement said.
The deceased were identified as Shamsiya Miko, aged about 35, and Fatima Danlami, aged about 40, while the identities of two other victims were yet to be confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
All victims were taken to Danbatta General Hospital for medical attention and other necessary procedures.
Preliminary investigation by the fire service indicated that a burst tyre caused the accident.
The Director of the agency, Sani Anas, urged motorists to drive cautiously, particularly along highways and areas close to waterways.
He also called on relevant authorities to urgently repair the Tomas Dam embankment to prevent future occurrences.
Meanwhile, two persons recently lost their lives in a road accident involving a trailer and a Toyota Corolla at Kwang community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State. Five persons were reportedly involved in the crash.
