The All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Bauchi State, Mohammed Abubakar, has assured residents that he will not abolish the newly created emirate councils and chiefdoms if elected governor in the 2027 election.
Abubakar, a former governor of the state, dismissed reports alleging that he plans to scrap the 20 newly created emirate councils and chiefdoms, describing the claims as false and politically motivated.
The position was contained in a statement issued on Sunday in Bauchi by his former Commissioner for Information, Umar Ibrahim-Sade.
According to Ibrahim-Sade, the reports are baseless propaganda aimed at misleading the public and creating unnecessary tension among traditional institutions across the state.
“Abubakar understands constitutional governance and the legal framework that established the existing traditional institutions.
“There is no official statement, campaign document, or policy proposal by him or the APC to dismantle emirates, chiefdoms, districts, or remove emirs and district heads,” he said.
He noted that traditional rulers play a vital role in peacebuilding, dispute resolution, cultural preservation and security intelligence gathering, adding that weakening such institutions would be counterproductive at a time when the state faces insecurity, farmer-herder clashes and communal disputes.
“Throughout his public service career, Abubakar has upheld due process and institutional independence.
“His leadership philosophy focuses on strengthening institutions, not undermining them. Traditional rulers are key stakeholders in governance and development, and that position has not changed,” Ibrahim-Sade added.
He urged political stakeholders to focus on issues, policies and development plans ahead of the 2027 governorship election rather than spreading unverified rumours.
The former commissioner further assured residents that Abubakar’s vision for Bauchi State includes strengthening the legal and administrative frameworks that support traditional institutions.
Kano Times reports that the administration of Governor Bala Mohammed created 20 new emirate councils and a chiefdom from the state’s former five emirate councils.
