The Federal Government has donated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to students of three tertiary institutions in Kano State as part of efforts to ease transportation challenges and improve mobility on campuses.
The beneficiary institutions are Bayero University Kano (BUK), Northwest University Kano, and Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education (YUMSFUE).
The buses were presented during a Democracy Day celebration held at Bayero University Kano.
The distribution exercise was coordinated by the Northern Project Coordination Office in collaboration with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) and the Presidential CNG Initiative (PI-CNG).
Organisers said the intervention was aimed at supporting students, reducing transportation costs and promoting the adoption of cleaner energy in the transportation sector.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Media and Publicity, Malam Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, described the initiative as part of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of students and strengthening the education sector.
According to him, the programme reflects the administration’s determination to provide practical support that will make learning more conducive for students across the country.
He said, “This programme forms part of the government’s broader commitment to supporting education and improving the welfare of students.”
Abdulaziz, who was among the delegation sent by President Tinubu to oversee the Democracy Day celebration in Kano, urged the beneficiary institutions and students to ensure proper use and maintenance of the buses.
He added that the intervention would only achieve its intended objectives if the vehicles were effectively managed for the benefit of students.
The Federal Government has continued to promote the use of CNG as a cleaner and more affordable alternative energy source, while rolling out measures aimed at cushioning the impact of transportation costs on Nigerians.
