The Kano State House of Assembly Committee on Mineral Resources has pledged legislative support to strengthen the state’s mining sector and improve revenue generation through enhanced oversight and collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
Chairman of the committee, Hon. Usman Abubakar Tasi’u, made the commitment during an oversight visit to the Kano State Ministry of Mineral Resources on Monday.
According to Tasi’u, the visit was to assess the ministry’s performance, review its achievements, identify operational challenges and explore ways to enhance the sector’s contribution to Kano’s economy.
“We are committed to fostering a cordial working relationship with the ministry to facilitate laws and policies that will promote sustainable mineral resource development for the benefit of government, investors, artisanal miners and host communities,” he said.
He also stressed the need to strengthen regulatory measures, including the implementation of Community Development Agreements (CDAs), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and occupational safety standards.
Responding, the Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Hamza Safiyanu Kachako, described the visit as a demonstration of the Assembly’s commitment to the development of the mining sector.
Kachako said the ministry had secured the approval of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the adoption of the Kano State Mining Policy, established a mining task force, formalised the registration of miners and mineral buyers, and developed a framework for the assessment and collection of mining-related revenues.
He assured the lawmakers of the ministry’s full cooperation in the discharge of their oversight responsibilities.
