The lifeless body of a former member of the House of Representatives from Jigawa State and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Abba Anas Adamu, has been released to his family by kidnappers after the payment of ransom.
Adamu was abducted alongside another Jigawa politician, Ali Tukur Gantsa, while travelling to Abuja to attend an ADC congress.
Sources told journalists that the abductors initially demanded N100 million but later agreed to accept N50 million for Gantsa’s release while handing over Adamu’s corpse.
The incident has plunged members of the ADC in Jigawa State and political associates of the deceased into mourning, with many describing him as a grassroots politician known for humility and integrity.
A family source disclosed that the victims were kidnapped last Wednesday while travelling from Kano to Abuja for a political meeting.
“They were abducted last Wednesday en route from Kano to Abuja for a political meeting. The abductors took them to a nearby bush in Jere and demanded a ransom of N200 million. After prolonged negotiations, the sum of N50 million was agreed upon,” the source said.
According to insiders, Adamu, who reportedly suffered from asthma and hypertension, was without his medication during captivity, worsening his health condition amid the stress of the ordeal.
Despite efforts by Gantsa to comfort him, Adamu’s condition deteriorated and he later died in captivity. The kidnappers allegedly concealed the development until negotiations progressed, when one of them hinted that the former lawmaker had died.
An insider further revealed that the ransom was delivered by Adamu’s son and driver, after which the abductors released Gantsa and showed the deceased’s son his father’s remains.
As of the time of filing this report, the Jigawa State chapter of the ADC had yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
However, Kano Times gathered that Adamu’s remains were being conveyed to Kano, while burial arrangements were still being finalised.
