Tensions appear to be rising between Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State and his political mentor, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, over the governor’s alleged refusal to dismiss two key government officials as instructed by Kwankwaso Daily Trust reports.
Reports from NAN indicate that the officials in question are the Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye, and the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Abdullahi Bichi.
According to sources, Kwankwaso is dissatisfied with Bichi’s refusal to follow his directives in certain official matters. Furthermore, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) leader reportedly prefers a social media influencer to replace Dantiye, believing the individual would be more effective in managing the ministry and the government’s public image.
However, sources close to the governor say Yusuf is seeking a direct discussion with Kwankwaso regarding the issue rather than simply complying with what has been described as an “order.”
A support group named “Abba Tsaya Da Kafarka,” meaning “Abba, Wake Up and Assert Yourself,” has emerged, advocating for Yusuf to stand his ground.
According to insiders, the group argues that Yusuf should stop behaving like a subordinate and begin asserting his leadership more forcefully. The group also claims that Kwankwaso had appointed many of the state’s political office holders, including commissioners.
In a related development, members of the National Assembly under the NNPP reportedly met with Yusuf, encouraging him to establish his autonomy as governor.
NNPP Kano chairman Alhaji Hamisu Dungurawa has also announced the suspension of the SSG, Dr. Abdullahi Bichi, and the Commissioner for Transport, Alhaji Muhammad Diggol, citing alleged anti-party activities.
When reached for comment, Kwankwaso aligned himself with the party chairman’s decision, stating, “I will not say anything more since the party chairman has already addressed it.”
Attempts to contact the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, were unsuccessful, as his phone was unanswered on Tuesday night.
