Hundreds of supporters from across local government areas in the Kano South Senatorial District on Sunday staged a solidarity march in Rano Local Government Area, calling for the appointment of Rt. Hon. Kabiru Alhassan Rurum as Deputy Governor of Kano State.
The rally, which attracted a large crowd, started at the residence of Rurum, also known as Turakin Rano, before proceeding to the palace of the Emir of Rano, Alhaji Muhammad Isa Umar.
The participants, drawn from Rano, Kibiya and Bunkure, said the demand reflected a long-standing call for Kano South to produce the state’s deputy governor.
Receiving the delegation, the Emir of Rano pledged to convey their concerns to the state government.
“I am delighted with the unity shown by the people of this emirate in supporting one of their own for such an important position,” the Emir said.
He said the traditional institution would ensure that the request was properly communicated to the relevant authorities.
Speaking at the rally, the Chairman of Rano Local Government, Malam Naziru Ya’u, described Rurum as a “capable and tested leader”, adding that his previous tenure facilitated development projects in Rano, Kibiya and Bunkure.
“The time has come for Kano South to be given a fair chance. For many years, we have not been represented at this level,” he said.
Also speaking, the member representing Rano in the Kano State House of Assembly, Hon. Ibrahim Malami Rano, said consultations were ongoing among lawmakers from the zone.
“We have begun consultations to unite all 16 lawmakers from Kano South in support of Kabiru Alhassan Rurum’s aspiration,” he said, adding that the Emir should engage other traditional rulers in the zone for a collective effort.
The commissioner of the Public Complaints Commission (PCC), representing Kano State, Ibrahim Zakari Sarina, said Rurum was the most suitable among those being considered.
“Among the names being considered, Rurum stands out in terms of political experience and contributions to development,” he said.
Another stakeholder, Alhaji Wada Abdullahi Rano, said the demand was based on fairness and Rurum’s popularity in the area.
“Kano South deserves this opportunity. Rurum is widely followed because of his developmental efforts, not because he is seeking support,” he said.
Former lawmaker representing Bunkure, Hon. Mai Shanu Bunkure, expressed optimism that the area would celebrate if Rurum eventually secured the slot.
Similarly, Hon. Mai Fada Bello Kibiya reaffirmed support for the bid, urging the state governor to consider Rurum for the position.
An APC chieftain, Ya’u Beza Rano, also called on the Emir to lead a delegation to formally present the request to the Kano State Government, describing Rurum as competent for the office.
