Man, girlfriend held in custody for suspected adultery in Kano court

A Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Kano on Thursday ordered the remand of Aliyu Yakubu, 24, and Aisha Sani, 19, at the Correctional Center for alleged adultery. The duo, residents of Sauna Quarters Kano and Hotoro Yandodo Quarters Kano, are charged with criminal conspiracy and adultery.

Prosecutor Miss Khadija Aliyu informed the court that the defendants committed the offense in 2023 at Hotoro Quarters Kano. She alleged that the defendants conspired and engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse with the female victim, resulting in pregnancy and the birth of a baby boy.

According to the prosecutor, the offense contravened sections 97, 387, and 388 of the Penal Code. The defendants pleaded guilty, leading Chief Magistrate Fauziyya Isa-Sheshe to order their remand in a Correctional Centre. The matter is adjourned until Feb. 8 for judgment and sentencing.

In a related development, the prosecutor arraigned four men before the same court for allegedly attempting to commit abortion. The defendants, Abdulmalik Ibrahim, Ummukulsum Yakubu, Dominic Offor, and Nkechi Okechukwu, face charges of criminal conspiracy, concealment of birth, and abetment.

Prosecution Counsel Khadija Aliyu stated that the defendants committed the offense in 2023. She alleged that they criminally conspired and attempted to conceal Aisha’s pregnancy, violating sections 97, 83, and 239 of the Penal Code.

While the first and second defendants pleaded guilty, the third and fourth defendants pleaded not guilty. Chief Magistrate Isa-Sheshe ordered the remand of all defendants in a Correctional Center and adjourned the matter until Feb. 8 for judgment and hearing.
