The Kano State House of Assembly has received a counter plea against the proposed dissolution of five emirate councils in the state.
Nasiru Ibrahim Rano, Chairman of Inuwar Masarautun Kano Biyar, submitted the plea in response to a request from individuals under the banner of YAN DANGWALEN JIHAR KANO.
In the detailed letter addressed to the Rt. Hon. Speaker and other honorable members of the 10th Assembly, Rano passionately outlined reasons why the emirates, particularly those upgraded to first-class status, should be retained.
He emphasized the historical significance of these emirates, stressing that most of them were independent Hausa states even before the Jihad of Usman bn Fodio. Restoring them to their past status, according to Rano, was a commendable move that aligned with preserving cultural heritage.
Rano further pointed out that the emirate councils served as more than just traditional institutions; they were considered additional platforms for representation by various communities, especially in rural areas. He argued that the emirs, as representatives of their subjects, played a crucial role in seeking opportunities for the development of their emirates.
The counter plea educated the honorable house on several issues, including the potential adverse effects of tampering with emirates. Ibrahim highlighted that the emirates provided an additional opportunity for representation, not only on local issues but also in the national space.
Additionally, the letter emphasized that the law establishing these emirates was enacted by the historic Chamber with the belief that the upgrade would bring development to rural areas and bring the government closer to the governed.
Nasiru cited the flourishing economic activities in the headquarters of the four emirates outside metropolitan Kano as evidence of this assumption becoming a reality, especially in rural economic development.
The counter plea warned against the potential security implications of tampering with emirates, expressing concern about endangering the security of life and property in Kano State.
Rano concluded by addressing the suspicion that the advocacy for emirate dissolution could be sponsored mischief aimed at promoting personal interests.
He expressed confidence that the honorable house would not allow such selfish individuals to exploit the legislative body for personal agendas, affirming the belief in justice, fairness, and accountability.
The counter plea ultimately appealed to the Kano State House of Assembly to act in the best interest of the people of Kano State, particularly residents of non-metropolitan communities that have been neglected in terms of developmental projects and economic development.
