The Controller of Corrections for Kano State, CC SM Inuwa, has received the newly appointed Chairperson of the Kano State Committee for the Prerogative of Mercy, Hajia Azumi Namadi Bebeji, in his office.

A statement by SC Musbahu Lawan Kofar Nassarawa, Corrections Public Relations Officer for the Kano Command, said Hajia Azumi paid a courtesy visit to foster a cordial working relationship between the two offices.

Namadi expressed her readiness to decongest the Custodial Centers in the State as part of the efforts championed by Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, the Governor of the state, to decongest the Custodial Centers in the State.

She also assured that the present government of Abba Kabir Yusuf would take the necessary steps for the betterment of the lives of inmates in the Custodial Centers across the state.

She reiterated the government’s commitment to reforming the justice system by putting a cap on trial periods for the speedy disposal of cases, as many inmates stay for a long period of time before knowing their fate.

Namadi promised to consider inmates’ cases before the Prerogative of Mercy committee, as mandated by the Constitution.

In his response, the Controller of Corrections for Kano, Suleiman M Inuwa, thanked Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf for inaugurating the committee when needed, stressing that the Custodial Centers are filled to capacity.

He called on the Governor to exercise the power conferred on him by the Constitution to grant pardon to deserving inmates.

The Controller expressed his happiness with the chairperson of the Committee for her zeal, determination, and commitment to working with the Correctional Service in the State by visiting the major Custodial Centers in the State.

He prayed to Almighty Allah to assist her in discharging her duty.
