The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano (BUK) chapter, rejected the appointment of Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, a Kano politician, to the Governing Council of the university over the weekend.

The Chairperson, Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, stated that the process leading to the appointment of politicians to the Governing Council contravened the laws guiding such appointments.

Addressing newsmen, Comrade Suraj expressed dissatisfaction with the federal government’s decision to appoint hardcore politicians to the Governing Council. He emphasized that the criteria for such appointments clearly favor technocrats and academics.

The Chairperson also criticized the dismissal of the previous Council, which had a constitutional mandate of four years, after only one year in office, calling it a violation of the rule of law.

He urged the federal government to reinstate the Senator Udo Udoma-led Governing Council to complete their term.

Suraj compared the situation to sacking a state governor after just one year in office and assuming everything is normal, labeling it as a violation of the rule of law.

Earlier, Ibrahim Tajo Suraj led a peaceful protest on Friday, demanding the federal government pay their entitlements and implement the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement. This action was in compliance with a directive from the national body for all branches to organize protests within their campuses.
