The Edo State government has indefinitely postponed the resumption of all schools in the state due to the recent rise in petrol prices.
Ojo Akin-Longe, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Education, announced the decision in a memo issued on Saturday.
The National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited raised the pump price of petrol to N855 on September 3, with independent and major marketers adjusting their prices between N855 and N1,000.
President Bola Tinubu stated that the petrol price increase and other reforms are part of his administration’s strategy to drive Nigeria’s economic development.
According to the memo, the resumption date initially set for September 9 has been postponed until further notice.
It reads: “The Edo State Government hereby announces the postponement of the resumption of all public and private schools in Edo State, originally scheduled for Monday, 9th September 2024, until further notice.”
The memo further explains that schools will remain closed due to the rising tensions from the fuel price hike and the difficulties faced by parents and guardians.
The government advises parents and caregivers to closely monitor their children and wards during this period of heightened tension.
