Garzali Musa Muhammad, a member of the New Nigerian People Party (NNPP), has expressed concerns over the nomination process for chairmanship candidates in the upcoming local government elections in Kano State.
In a formal complaint to the NNPP National Chairman in Abuja, Muhammad, through his solicitors, criticized the process as undemocratic and secretive.
The complaint, submitted by F.I. Umar & Co., outlines Muhammad’s dissatisfaction after he purchased and submitted the necessary nomination forms to run for Kano Municipal Local Government chairmanship, adhering to party and electoral guidelines.
Muhammad and other candidates were initially told they would be informed about the nomination process. However, over a month later, he learned that nominations had already taken place without his or other contestants’ knowledge.
“Our client was notified that the selection of candidates had already occurred without the majority of contestants, including our client, being informed,” the letter states.
The letter accuses the party leadership of violating democratic principles and the NNPP’s constitution by failing to provide a fair and transparent process. Muhammad’s legal team emphasized that the process ignored party guidelines, leaving their client dissatisfied.
“This violates the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Electoral Act, and the NNPP’s own constitution,” the letter continued, urging the party chairman to address the issue.
Muhammad’s solicitors warned that if the matter isn’t resolved through dialogue, their client would challenge the nomination process in court.
As the elections approach, the NNPP has not publicly responded to the allegations. Party members are monitoring the situation, with some insiders hinting at internal disputes over candidate selection.
This controversy arises amid rising tensions as political parties prepare for the local government elections in Kano, considered crucial for the state’s political landscape.
